Pinterest is a social networking website that was launched in March of 2010 by Ben Silbermann. While this website is relatively new, it has seen a rapid increase in users and is currently the third most popular social media website in the world. In fact, only Facebook and Twitter are more widely used than Pinterest. Another interesting fact is that Pinterest was the fastest site to reach 10 million unique visitors which means it could potentially surpass Twitter and maybe even Facebook in the future.

The premise of this website is that it allows users to create online boards where they “pin” things like photos or products to share with others. Part of the appeal is the simplicity and aesthetic quality of this website, and the ease with which users can organize their pins onto boards. Once boards have been created, other people can “like”, “repin” or comment on original pins. Like Facebook and Twitter, Pinterest allows people to follow one another. Unlike other social media websites, users can choose to follow individual boards or follow all of a person’s boards in their entirety.

As of 2012, Pinterest is primarily geared toward the female demographic with many pins consisting of fashion, home decor and arts and crafts. Consequently, the types of business promotions are somewhat limited to female oriented products. However, there appears to be a gradual shift where more and more men are using the website. In fact, the amount of male users in England actually exceeds the amount of female users. This is why it would appear that the female to male ratio should eventually become more balanced in the future.

Due to the increasing popularity of Pinterest and the exposure it’s getting, this website can be incredibly valuable for businesses who want to advertise online. Much like Facebook and Twitter, Pinterest allows businesses to develop a following and keep individuals updated on the latest products. Along with this, Pinterest makes it incredibly easy to share products with others and has a strong element of virality.
