Did you know that the biggest porn site on the web, Xvideos, is actually three times bigger than news website giants CNN and ESPN? Did you know furthermore, that Xvideos averages 4.4 billion page views on a monthly basis? Yes, porn sites comprise a huge bulk of the top 500 sites on the web, and it’s not surprising why as much 30% of total data being transferred across the web, day in and day out, is actually porn.
In a report compiled by ExtremeTech early this month, it has been shown that the average time spent on a porn site is three to five times longer than the average time spent perusing other sites, such as news websites. This is the predominant user behavior difference between a porn website and a non-porn site. Most, if not all, porn sites moreover stream videos – not images and text standard with most non-porn sites – which translates to these porn websites transferring colossal data (approximately 29 petabytes of data) across the web monthly.
Since video streaming demands more storage, bandwidth, and CPU cycles, it’s also clear that these porn sites are investing a lot into their business, in terms of infrastructure. These sites are seen to store as much data as Facebook or even YouTube, so that hardware requirements and storage and bandwidth capacities will have to keep up. These sites have either invested in their own data centers, paying cloud providers or renting out data center racks.
YouPorn, the second biggest porn site on the Internet, volunteered a few statistics on their online traffic performance. The site accommodates an epic 100 million page views every single day and during its peak traffic time supplies 4000 pages/second. And with the growing number of sites already the size of YouPorn – dozens of big sites and hundreds of mid-size porn sites are currently populating the web – there’s no denying the solid claim that porn has made in the entire Internet landscape today.
