Most of us have heard that within our lifetime we could expect to be introduced to an actual flying car. While it may be hard to believe, these aircraft slash cars are expected to begin production and have the first ones rolling out within a year’s time. The vehicle – appropriately named Terrafugia Transition – will be able to fly as well as travel on the highway like a regular car. Don’t expect to use them to get out of traffic though, the vehicle requires a runway to both takeoff and land. You also will not see them everywhere you turn. With a price tag of a hefty $279,000 there will be very few purchased and seen on our roads.

More about the vehicle: it will have a propeller engine. To be exact: Rotax 912 U.L.S. 4-cylinder, 1.2-liter aircraft engine.  The existence of the aircraft engine will make the vehicle capable of 100 horsepower which equates to about 100 miles per hour while airborne. On the ground, the Transition will be able to maintain highway speeds. It is also expected to conserve fuel quite nicely – offering 35 miles per gallon on the road and an expected 450 miles in the air on a single tank – which by the way, holds 23 gallons. The gears, however, will be appropriate for both traveling on the roads and in the sky. In no other vehicle will you find neutral, drive, reverse as well as propeller gears. It will certainly be thrilling.

While the vehicle is not the easiest on the eyes, it is certainly designed to impress. No other vehicle on the market holds a flame to the ability to fly, even with its hefty price tag. To reserve your Transition, you can expect to put $10,000 down. As of current, there are about 100 people holding reservations to get the first Transition vehicles which are slated to be produced in Boston. How very exciting for technology!
