Google Drive finally launched today and as anticipated with the update of Google Docs to 5 GB of storage, Google Drive will fully integrate Google Docs inside.
Drive will allow users to create, share, and collaborate with their documents online (photos, videos, Docs, PDF, etc..).
The service will offer 5GB of free storage and will be available on Mac, PC and via an android app. A mobile application for iOS (iPhone / iPad) will be unveiled in the next coming weeks. Drive will also have easy access for the visually impaired, through a reading tool.
For users who need more storage, Google will sell 20 GB of storage for $ 4 per month.
Powerful search engine
The advanced internal search engine will allow users to find everything they want by keyword, inside a text and even inside a scanned photo. Users will be able to search by document owner, by date, document type, etc.
Centralized management
“New tools are available in the Apps control interface for administrators to add or remove storage space for individual or groups of users.”
Safety and Synchronization
Google says the data will be encrypted between the browser and server and a double-check option will avoid account intrusion by asking users to connect by entering a code generated from their mobile phone.
The data will be synchronized in several server farms, which will avoid Google losing users’ documents in the event of a datacenter would crash.
Finally the company announces a 99.9% availability for documents.
