After StatCounter collected data and published a comparison graph on the popularity of several browsers including Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome, the figures have spoken. Google Chrome is now the top browser, outdoing Internet Explorer on the ‘Most Used’ scale by a small margin.
StatCounter data showed that Chrome was able to hold a 32.76 market share percentage between May 14 and May 20 while Microsoft’s Internet Explorer secured 31.94 percent. According to analysts, this rise by Chrome is not at all surprising, given that this Google-designed browser had been growing in user popularity for quite some time. On March 18 StatCounter reported Chrome to be on top for a single day. After further break down on actual browser usage, both IE and Chrome battled for the top spot for the rest of May. The previous week put Chrome on top, though, and this could mean that Google’s browser is finally outwitting IE.
StatCounter also showed that Android Robot has overtaken Opera as the most popular option for mobile web use in March, giving Google another edge in terms of web surfing. Nonetheless, CNET reports that Chrome has descended from its lofty throne this week, with a market share percentage of 31.88. IE comes second at 31.47 but the slight margin may point to the volatility of Chrome’s top position.
StatCounter CEO Aodhan Cullen released comment on Chrome’s performance back in March, when it toppled IE for just one day. During that time Cullen remarked about Chrome being the choice of users during weekends. “Whether Chrome can take the lead in the browser wars in the long term remains to be seen, however the trend towards Chrome usage at weekends is undeniable. At weekends, when people are free to choose what browser to use, many of them are selecting Chrome in preference to Internet Explorer.”
Launched in 2008, Google Chrome is known for its many extensions – which may have helped establish and grow its appeal – including G+ Twitter for Google Plus, Save to Foursquare and Writer.
