If privacy is a major concern for you – like for most people – you might have been upset by the recent changes in Google’s private policy. Now, there is a solution for you – a little search engine called DuckDuckGo.com.
Duck Duck Go may be small but numbers continue to climb and the search engine had its busiest day on March 28th when it reached just over 1.5 million search inquiries (it’s about 45 million direct queries per month). While Google may not even bat its eyelashes at this fact, how long will it take before Duck Duck Go is the next big internet craze – especially when privacy is what people desire?
DuckDuckGo for the most part, until recently has been run out of the basement of Gabriel Weinberg, the founder of the search engine who lives in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Unlike Google, Duck Duck Go does not sell any information to advertisers. Weinberg believes – and rightfully so – that it is creepy to have search engines tracking you and suggesting things that you may want to read or look into. Duck Duck Go’s privacy policy is such a hit that even Anonymous – the famous hacking collective uses the site.
Weinberg explains that he is not in the search engine business to make millions, despite the fact that he already is a millionaire. He simply wanted to design a search engine based on his technological curiosity. Despite this, he did want to remain true to the original purpose of a search engine – to display relevant information based on the initial query. Users will never have to worry about cross promotion between other products, simply because there are no other products.
Privacy matters here, in Western civilization, but over in the eastern part of the world, searching anonymously and without being tracked is important in terms of life and death situations.
When privacy matters, Duck Duck Go comes to the rescue.
“We had another great month, growing by about 50%! In March DuckDuckGo received over 45 million direct queries” see more here.
