Dropbox just announced on their blog that users can now share their content with friends using a single URL, even if recipients don’t have a dropbox account.
So far nothing revolutionary since Box.net already provides this type of sharing via an URL. But here what is really interesting and different is that the recipient does not need to have a Dropbox account (perfect to share family pictures with your grandmother).
Here you can share a file (document, image, video, presentation …) but also an entire dropbox folder. And viewing the content is done directly online in the browser. (read-only, not editable)
For those who want to keep copies of files, Dropbox still offers the possibility to download them to your computer or directly into your account (for recipients who have a dropbox account).
Note that the timing of this announcement is far from being innocent because Google is going to unveil officially a similar service this week, called Drive….
