You might have heard about Facebook’s new messenger, for some it is old news. In December, a tester of the Facebook messenger leaked a link to download the app. Facebook responded, in turn, by making the client available to the public. For those of you who did not know about the app, you should see it on your Facebook page today as it has officially been released by Facebook. The app is being released in waves, so if you do not see it today, you will see it in the coming weeks, if you are a Windows user, that is. Mac users have to wait while Facebook completes the app.
So why is Facebook releasing a desktop client when it already engages users on its site? The main purpose that Facebook hopes to achieve with the app is to engage members to use Facebook even more than they already do. The company knows that they have essentially reached the most members across the globe that they will. Now, the focus turns to getting these users to stay on Facebook longer, and in turn earn the company more money. With this, it is possible that users may use Facebook longer than the average 7 hours per month logged – a record, by the way, for any social media site.
Users who downloaded the client in December will not see any new features with today’s release. Instead, the company was just fine honing the bugs that come with a new development. The app, it appears has been a huge hit with those who frequent Facebook. They no longer have to sign into the site to see any notifications, they are all delivered to the desktop messenger. The client is currently available on many platforms including iOS, Android and Blackberries. Will you be downloading the messenger anytime soon?
