Google Chrome’s BUILD Experiment – 8 Trillion 3D LEGO Blocks Online

Written on 27 June 2012 by Aimee

Now, the classic LEGO bricks everyone has grown up with have gone 3D, and more than 8 trillion of these are available to you online via Chrome with BUILD WITH CHROME.

In what has been dubbed by Google Chrome as their Build experiment, this new project allows Chrome users the ability and the venue to explore and build original LEGO creations online. In a post published over at Google Australia’s blog, Google Australia and New Zealand’s Product Marketing Manager Lockey McGrath has referred to Build as the largest LEGO set available, with its no-less-than 8 trillion bricks.

Build is a partnership with LEGO Australia, offering more than the ability for Chrome users to play with LEGO bricks through an online platform. Here, players may also pick any available plot from an Australian map, so original LEGO creations will earn its own slot on any specific Australian landmark. Builders may access buildwithchrome.com to jumpstart on their LEGO building creativity, they are encouraged to explore the map, pick out a spot and start LEGO-building. Several house rules apply though, and submission to LEGO is an essential step even after having created and published any LEGO creation. A few of the rules require originality, safe playing, and decency or appropriateness.

McGrath has gone on to explain the tools behind the BUILD experiment, which makes use of WebGL technology, allowing for impressive browser-based 3D graphics. Current advances in browser technology – not available in recent years – have made this experiment possible today. With the integration of Google Maps, furthermore, builders will have the satisfaction of seeing their LEGO creations installed with the rest.

A project that the Google Australia team has been at work on in Sydney, the Build experiment is expected to be launched first in Australia and New Zealand. Gradually, the experiment will be launched in other countries, too. Google encourages everyone to let their creativity loose with these online LEGO bricks, promising to re-post the most original ones for the rest of the world to see.
