When you are a beginner with Android, it’s not easy to guess what all these icons and symbols mean on the top bar (notifications and status bar)! And they are very small. For example, how do you know you got a call on your voicemail? Ok you can scroll down the menu from the top bar with your finger and you’ll be able to see the details.

Okay! but the best would be to have a beautiful chart, right?

So I started looking for a table of all the symbols for Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0 +) and I found nothing. Apparently it’s not easy to find. Symbols for Android 4.0 and higher:

symboles icones android 4

But there is no explanation, so you can refer to Android 2.3 Gingerbread symbols as they are almost the same :

Notifications Icons and Symbols :

Status Icons :

I have 4.0 and have a symbol in the notification bar that is the same as the ‘More Notifications’ but instead of a + in the middle it is – . Any suggestions as to what this means?

I have the same icon that is stated by Victoria as of a couple days ago. Can’t find anything about it anywhere. Any ideas?

Hi there! Thank you for your info; very helpful!
I’ve got a 2 week old Galaxy S III. So far so good… considering I just got into the 21st century and my previous modus operandi was a Razor! This morning there appeared out of no where a symbol that I can’t find on the net and no IT friends have any idea what it means: in the upper LEFT hand corner of the screen
is a white circle with a lower case “i” in it and a backwards slash through it. Any idea what it is?
    Thank you!

Same as Victoria, Mike and Brittany, anyone figured it out? Can’t seem to get rid of the Damn thing either…

    Hi Guys,

I had the same problem as most of you so I went on a bit of a quest for a solution:

“Pull down the notification bar, scroll right at the top where you have wifi, GPS, sound etc and select “notifications”. Your minus sign will go and ordinary notification icons reappear.

EDIT: this functionality has now been removed from Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and individual app notifications can be enabled/disabled by going to Menu>Manage Apps>choose any app>tick/untick “Show Notifications”.”

I had a symbol which was a big red dot and when I brought the bar down it said always listening. I couldn’t get rid of it until I took the battery out. I don’t. know where it came from on to my android.
